The SmartICE program augments Inuit Knowledge by introducing new technology, enabling northern communities to maintain traditional livelihoods and cultural practices in the face of changing ice conditions. SmartICE's innovative approach to research that is based on community involves youth in the design, creation and deployment of ice monitoring sensors that are stationary. The program includes training in both social and technical skills to enable youth to become effective environmental monitors of their local ice conditions.
The project has been the recipient of several accolades including the Arctic Inspiration Prize in 2016. SmartICE launched the Northern Production Centre at Nain, Nunatsiavut in 2019. This facility trains Inuit to build and deliver stationary SmartICE sensors to communities across Inuit Nunangat and northern Canada. It also provides jobs that are meaningful and contribute to an optimistic future for the north.
