The game features a variety of official game modes that include the classic bomb defusal mode that was first introduced in the first Counter-Strike in 1999. In competitive and casual queues, each round in the game sees an attacker team attempt to place bombs on one of two sites while the counter-terrorists are charged with stopping them or defusing the bomb after it has been planted. The game also has a hostage rescue mode that is rarely used in matches in competition as well as an action-packed battle royale mode known as Danger Zone.

Ancient was one of the most recent maps to be added to the Active Duty pool, but it was met with some controversy and criticism from the community when it took the place of Dust II.
