Which Lightweight Double Pushchair Should You Buy?

A light double pushchair makes it easy to move around, especially if you have children of different age groups. They are easy to fold, steer and transport up and over steps.

This City Mini GT2 offers side-by-side seats with plenty of legroom, adjustable reclining and huge UPF 50+ canopies with peekaboo windows. It also has a frame that expands in width to accommodate a second car seat or a second passenger.

Side-by-Side

The majority of the lightweight double pushchairs we've test are side-byside models and are best suited for kids who can sit up unassisted because they aren't equipped with car seat integration. That said there are some exceptions. Thule Urban Glide 2 Double and the Baby Trend Sit 'N Stand Double are both excellent options that offer adjustable recline in both seats, a wide canopy, and padded 5-point harnesses. They are also simple to maneuver despite their bigger footprint. They are great for parents who worry about fitting through doors.

The Cybex Duet pushchair is unique because it features a unique frame that can be expanded to add another child seat. This makes it lighter than other pushchairs with side-by-side seating. It is able to fit through doors that are standard and is easy to maneuver on public transportation. It also doubles as a jogger, which is ideal when you are planning to use it in conjunction with an infant car seat or baby carrier.

The UPPAbaby Vista v2 double is another fantastic side-by-side double that is lightweight twin stroller. It offers additional flexibility due to a modular frame. The clever design allows you to convert it into a double or single buggy by adding two carrycots or car seats for children. It can even accommodate twins. It's a great option for families that are growing, and the UPPAbaby also is among the lightest and most stylish umbrella strollers around.

If you're looking for a more compact lightweight double, try the egg2 which folds to the size of a small suitcase. It can be used as a single or a double with the addition of two carrycots or infant car seats, and our home testers loved how simple and sleek it was to handle even when stuffed with children.

Although they're light double pushchairs side-by-side are not foolproof. If your children are at the same age and stage, they may still argue over who gets to sit in which position. If they're taller than each other, a tandem style might be better for them as it lets them confront each other.

Tandem

While side-byside models might be better suited for siblings of the same age, tandem lightweight double pushchairs offer their own perks. Some can fit carseats that are larger, and others have Reversible seats. Some even come with an additional carrycot or convertible seat in the middle. They are generally more spacious and simple to get in and out of, although their baskets are typically smaller than the ones on single buggies. They also have larger big canopies with windows that peek out as well as a parent cup holder and padded leg cushions for children.

The iCandy Peach is another example of a good-value lightweight tandem. Its fabrics feel a little less premium than some of our other top-rated tandems, however, it still looks and feels great and is very user-friendly. One of the most impressive aspects about it is its single-handed fold - although it will require some practice, Kirstie in our Lab has said it's "genius". It's not foldable with the carrycot attached but the mechanism for attaching and taking it off it is easy and quick.

Tandem lightweight double strollers will generally have a more precise turning compared to side-by-side models. However, they may be harder to navigate on uneven surfaces and curbs. They can also be a little slower to pick up speed and are heavier to move, which could put strain on your back.

Another option is a convertible double buggy that starts out as a single and then you add adapters to turn it into a double. They can include an additional seat, a carrycot, or both in the front. Or the children can sit together. Some may have the option of including a buggyboard that helps an older child keep pace with younger siblings or brothers.

The Uppababy Vista V2 can be transformed into a twin-sized stroller by purchasing additional cocoons for PS59 each. These cocoons provide an open space for infants. They can be joined or placed in a row. You can also use the car seat that was included with the pushchair, in the event that it is compatible. As they're made with quality materials, these kinds of dual-use buggies can often be used for years without showing any wear, indicating they have high price resales.

Single-to-Double

This light double buggy was designed for families who love to go on outdoor adventures and would like to upgrade from an individual-stroller. It can be transformed into a jogger using kits that include air-filled tires and all-wheel suspension. It is also a good option for twins, or children of different age groups and as triple tandem, it can handle rough terrain. It's an excellent choice for parents who want a stylish design that is as sleek as a single to double stroller and comes in different fabric colours.

We loved the way this iCandy model folds up with just one hand, making it extremely simple to master. It's also heavier than other single-to-double pushchairs featured in this review, our home tester Karolina claimed that it feels extremely maneuverable, even when she had two toddlers and a carrycot inside.

The seat can be used parent-facing, and you can also purchase additional accessories for this stroller like the Roma Gemini carrycots (PS100 each) which are great for babies. The seats are comfortable for toddlers, with good headrests and lumbar support. There are numerous options for reclining the seats and the front seat is adjustable in different positions and the back seat offering the option of recline.

This kind of buggy has the greatest disadvantage of being wider than doubles that are side-by-side. This makes it difficult to maneuver through doorways, and it isn't easy to maneuver up and down kerbs. However, the wheels and suspension on these types of strollers generally do a good job of coping with paved surfaces and the fact that they're generally much lighter than some of the side-bysides means that you still have a decent amount of storage space. It's worth bearing in mind that strollers of this type aren't as adept at walking through the narrow aisles of supermarkets, and may struggle to handle a lot of shopping. It's a little easier to turn around even on the smallest of curving paths however, it can be difficult to turn them around on a straight path. Some are more easy to turn than other models, like the Thule Urban Glide 2 Double or Baby Trend Sit N' Stand Double.

Convertible

Convertible double pushchairs are ideal because they are able to be adapted to the changing requirements of families. They are typically single buggies and come with adapters that allow you to add a second child's seat or a carrycot (in certain instances) an automobile seat to the frame. Some can be converted back to a single one when your child reaches the age of walk or prefers to ride a buggyboard.

imageOne of the lightest double strollers we have on our list, this stylish tri-fold model can hold children up to 40 lbs each. It also has an easy-to-use basket between the seats to store things. Home users loved its spacious canopy with peekaboo windows, multi-position reclining seats and front and rear suspensions to ensure smoother rides on rough terrain. It also comes with a convenient parent cup holder, and an ample accessible, easily accessible basket. They also noted that the backs of the bags have small pockets which are just big enough to fit a phone and keys.
