imageReplacement Upvc Window Handles

The majority of replacement upvc window handles come with everything you need but if the original handle had screws or pins that held it in place, they must be removed. Remove the'snap-in' cover at the base of your handle.

You'll need to identify what type of window lock and handle you're replacing. This is vital!

Espag

Espag handles are a multipoint lock system that is installed on casement windows, such as uPVC and wooden double glazing. The handle has a 7mm square shaft that fits inside a gearbox on the uPVC window. When the handle is turned it triggers a series of locks around the perimeter of the window. Espag handles, also referred to as shootbolts, give more security than the single point locks found on older frames.

There are many options to choose from that include inline and cranked handles that can be operated with either the right or left hand. There are also ergonomic handles that improve the look and feel of your window as well as handles.

You'll need to measure the spindle size from the base of your uPVC handle if you wish to purchase the right replacement. This measurement, referred to as the step height will help you select the best uPVC window handle replacement handle for your home.

If you have to remove screws that are holding the handle, you can use a screwdriver or pliers. After you have removed the screws or pins that hold the spindle together then you can remove the handle.

After you have removed the handle, you can open the locking mechanism inside the frame of the windows and remove the cockspur block attached adjacent to the handle. This will allow the window to be opened. The new uPVC handles you have ordered should be able to slide over the cockspur block and then into handle spindle to allow the window to reopen. If you'd like to make sure that your uPVC handles are secure, it's best to replace the cockspur block with the brand new block.

Cockspur

Cockspur handles are usually found on older uPVC and aluminium windows. The handle closes and turns into a wedge-shaped receiver catch. (Not to be confused with timber latches which are also covered in this section.) These handles are available in lockable and nonlockable versions. They are available in a variety of different nose heights to suit the existing frame.

The handle locks by the thin spur (little triangle bit) pulling against a plastic wedge which is attached to the frame. They are typically one-way handles, but the deadlock that locks can be added to give additional security.

The replacement cockspur handles are also easy to put in. All you require is the correct backset as well as a new set (supplied). The backset is the distance between the baseplate of the window to the underside of the nose of the handle. In general Aluminium window frames typically have a backset of 9mm, whereas UPVC uses 21mm. There are many other variations however it is essential to measure the handle prior to buying the handle (see the video below for more details on how).

The spindle or, in certain cases the entire handle is removed by unwinding the handle. The new handle is fixed with a pair of pozidrivs screws. The pozidriv screw comes in a brass or a zinc finish to match the hardware you already have. There is also an option of self-locking pozidriv screws.

This cockspur handle is simple to install and is perfect for replacing or repairing old uPVC Windows. They feature a universal design that makes them suitable for all profiles and backsets. Each handle has three packers, each of a different thickness. They are installed on the underside of handles and can be used together to achieve backsets as small as 9-13mm or as high as 21mm. The handles are available in left and right-handed models, and in lockable and nonlockable models. They are also available in a variety nose heights.

Turn and Tilt

The premium European window style of tilt and turn has been in use in Europe for a long time, but it's only just beginning to gain popularity in the American market. They combine the functionality of three window styles into one: tilt, pivot, and in-swing. They are perfect for older homes since they offer more airflow than standard windows.

When tilt and turn windows are closed, they lock like any other fixed window. By turning the handle either 90or 180 degrees, depending on the type of tilt-and-turn window the sash opens to the outside and the window will tilt inwards to allow air to circulate. This is a great way to allow air circulation without having to open the large, potentially dangerous window.

The sash is also able to be fully opened by turning the handle 90or 180@. This allows for full air circulation, which is particularly useful for draughty houses or rooms where smoke or other odors can accumulate. This allows you to easily clean the glass's outside, as you can do it from inside your home. This is a task which often requires precarious steps.

Tilt-and-turn windows are also secure. When locked in the closed position they are difficult to open from the outside and they come with double seals to prevent rainwater from entering the house when in the tilted in-swing position. This is a helpful feature for older homes, where intruders are more likely to target windows that are opened using the side hinges.

Spade

There are a few different kinds of window handles that can be fitted to double-glazed windows made of upvc. The two main kinds are Espag handles and Cockspur handles. There's also tilt and turn handles blade or spade handles, and monkey tail handles. The type of handle you choose will depend on your preferences and the kind of windows you have.

You must know how your current handle is attached to the frame in order to select the correct replacement upvc handle. This is known as handing and is a crucial element to be aware of when buying online. Some handle designs don't fit all windows. For instance, certain handles are angled whilst others are straight and turn either left or right. You'll also require the spindle's size which is the distance between the base of the handle and the head of the handle.

Another important part of choosing the correct handle is knowing whether your windows require a restrictor or not. They are generally employed in high-rise flats or commercial structures, but are not required for homes that are primarily residential. It is also important to be aware of the step height which is the distance between the screw plate and the nose of handle.

The word spade originates from Old English spadu, spaedu or spada and has been translated into many languages, including German spaten and Low German spathen. During the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s in New York City the word spade was used to denigrate black people. Spade has since risen to prominence in pop culture and is a widely recognized symbol of African American heritage and pride.

It is important to get the right size when replacing a Cadenza-style handle. Handles are available in straight and angled styles that differ by only a few millimeters. The handle head is available in a variety shapes that include a D or T shape. It can also be left unhandled.
